$20bn undersea cable investment failing to deliver


Four years after the landing of broadband fibre-optic submarine cables, which are supposed to ease the long standing constraints of internet penetration and bandwidth, the expected upgrading of Nigeria’s e-governance, education and healthcare,and others, continue to suffer on account of poor access, especially in the hinterland.
Four cable systems that landed the country have been virtually stranded on the coastline, unable to deliver service to the hinterland, due to the under-developed distribution networks, including national long distance fibre, metro fibre and lastmile connectivity, required to push internet services in-land.
The federal government had set the target of a five-fold increase in broadband penetration, in consonance with the National Broadband Plan (NBP).

Glo boosts cashless policy, financial inclusion with Glo Xchange

Globacom, Nigeria’s national telecommunications carrier is boosting cashless policy and financial inclusion with the launch of Glo Xchange, a Mobile Money Agent Network that is aimed at accelerating mobile money revolution and financial inclusion in the country.
Glo Xchange was launched by Globacom in partnership with three licensed mobile money operators, FirstMonie, Ecobank and Stanbic IBTC in Lagos on Thursday.
The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, in a statement he personally signed on the launch of the platform, said the initiative marks the beginning of the deeper collaboration between the financial industry and the telecommunications sector.

Telecoms sector not included in GDP rebasing, says Nigerian-British chambers

The Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce, NBCC, has said that following the rebasing of the Nigeria’s GDP figures, the telecommunication sector, which has grown exponentially in the past 10 years and one of the fastest growing in the world, was not included in the country’s GDP.
In his welcome remark at the opening ceremony of the 2014 NBCC trade mission to the UK, at the London Chamber of Commerce, President of NBCC, Prince Adeyemi Adefulu, recalled on the 6th of April, the Nigerian National Bureau of Statistics announced a rebasing of the Nigeria’s GDP figures.
“The justification for the exercise was the need to
