How the U.S. Screwed Up in the Fight Against Ebola

It was a small victory in a grim, relentless, and runaway catastrophe. In July, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, both American medical workers in Liberia, became stricken with Ebola hemorrhagic fever after treating dozens suffering from the disease, which has a mortality rate of between 50 percent and 90 percent. They were rushed doses of an experimental cocktail of Ebola antibodies called ZMapp, flown home via a Gulfstream III on separate flights on Aug. 2 and 5, and isolated inside a special tent called an “aeromedical biological containment system.” The U.S. State Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) coordinated the flights, operated by Phoenix Air, a private transport company based in Georgia. Ebola could wreck W/Africa economies, warns World Bank

The Ebola outbreak could have a catastrophic impact on the economies of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the World Bank says.
The organisation says the economic impact of the virus could "grow eight-fold" in the "already fragile states".
However, it says the cost can be limited if the epidemic - and the accompanying fear - is contained by a fast global response.
Ebola has killed 2,461 people in West Africa - the largest ever outbreak.
US President Barack Obama has called the latest outbreak "a threat to global security", and announced a larger US role in fighting the virus. The measures announced included ordering 3,000 US troops to the region and building new healthcare facilities.
The UN Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the epidemic.
It is expected to

US fast-food protests lead to several arrests

Hundreds of US fast food workers have been arrested at protests after staging sit-ins demanding a so-called "living wage" of $15 (£9) per hour.
The protests - organised by the Service Employees International Union - took place in 150 US cities throughout the day.
Workers have been campaigning for two years to increase the current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour.
US President Barack Obama has said he supports a raise.
In New York, at least 34 protesters were arrested in Times Square outside a McDonald's restaurant. Arrests were also reported in Detroit, Chicago and Boston.
The National Restaurant Association, a trade group representing many fast-food chains, said in a statement
