General Motors South Africa closes plant due to strike

General Motors has halted production at its main South African plant because of the strike by the country's National Union of Metalworkers.
The US car giant has not been able to access component parts for its cars.
GM told the BBC that its production line was down, but that it has enough cars to sell over the next two weeks.
The current strike is targeted at the steel and engineering sector, which makes products for industries such as mines, automotives and telecoms.

Eskom workers strike despite court ruling

South Africa's largest union is going ahead with plans to picket the country's main energy supplier.
This is despite a court order barring it from undertaking strike action at the firm.
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) went on strike on Tuesday to demand higher wages.
Part of the demand is a pay increase for staff at the state-funded energy utility Eskom, where NUMSA has around 10,000 members.

South African engineers go on strike

Engineers and metalworkers in South Africa have gone on strike after talks on Monday failed to reach an agreement over pay.
The country's largest union, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), claims that more than 200,000 members are striking.
The union is demanding a 12% wage increase, almost double the rate of inflation.
So far employers have offered an 8% pay rise.
