The Nigerian
Communications Commission (NCC), on Friday said it had recorded 64, 229, 097
subscribers on its various Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)
networks.
This is contained in
the Internet Subscriber Data released by the NCC on its Website, as at the last
quarter of 2013.
The Data also
indicated that an additional 8, 150, 259 subscribers have joined the existing
56, 078, 838 customers in the third quarter, to browse the Internet.
The data, however,
showed that
the Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) Nigeria led in the
usage of the Internet, as 32, 704, 697 of its customers were using the web.
It showed that the
MTN Nigeria added 4, 227, 497 Internet users to its third quarter result of an
existing 28, 477, 200 subscribers.
Globacom followed
suit as it recorded 15, 109, 791 Internet customers as at Dec. 2013, adding 2,
133, 982 to its Internet subscribers of 12, 975, 809 in September 2013.
The data named Airtel
Nigeria with 10, 359, 362 Internet consumers as third on the roll, against the
9, 085, 153 customers it had in the third quarter of 2013.
Airtel with the data
showed that it increased by 1, 274, 209 subscribers.
Etisalat Nigeria
added 514, 571 subscribers to its already existing 5, 540, 676 Internet users
in the third quarter, thereby recording 6, 055, 247 users in the fourth quarter
of 2013.
The Internet
Subscriber Data showed that many GSM subscribers in Nigeria still depended on
voice services, although, data usage was envisaged to be the next revolution in
the telecommunications arena.
